This 48-page book follows the usual osprey format of good B &
W images and text that is easy to read and understand.
The book opens with a chapter on the development of the Panther, the
gives a chapter to each of the different versions starting with the
D. The text is easy to understand and gives dates and numbers of panthers
delivered and what modifications they had to underwent. The next chapter
explains what would have been the Panther II and how it was put on
hold during the summer of 1943. Next the Panther A is dealt with,
the text list the differences between the D and A and the numbers
built by each factory. The modifications made to the A during its
production run are also listed. A brief account of SS-NCO Ernst Barkmann’s
action around St Lô is also given. The Panther G is next again
listing the major differences between the A and G and the numbers
built and also accounts of the G used in action in the Ardennes campaign.
The Panther F is next again listing what would have been the differences
between the G and F. The next chapter is called the Panther Assessed
and deals with the tanks effectiveness in battle.
The centre 8 pages are of colour plates. 1st is an early model D in
over all Dark Yellow. 2 nd is a late model D in three-tone camouflage.
3 rd is an early A in winter white wash. 4 th is a 2-page cutaway
three-quarter view of an early G in three-tone camouflage. 5 th is
a late model A in ambush camouflage. 6 th is a late G in splinter
camouflage. 7 th is a three-quarter artist’s impression of a
model F in Dark Olive Green. The last 3 pages give a description of
each of the colour plates.
Conclusion:
Another excellent book for the modeller on a budget, with well researched
and easy to read text and good quality images. Again it also makes
a good companion for the Achung Panzer No 4 on the Panther.
